Two early medieval stone grave vaults, both of which were used for multiple burials, were found in the church of Altishofen. In the treasury of Beromünster Abbey there is a 7th-century ornate reliquary of gilded copper plates, which probably came from northern Italy.

Lucerne grew up around a Benedictine monastery, founded about on the right bank of the Reuss by Murbach Abbey in Alsace, of which it long remained a "cell".

It is first mentioned in a charter of under the name of Luciaria , which is probably derived from the patron saint of the monastery, St Leodegar.

The name Lucerrun is first mentioned in At some point, a small village grew up around the monastery.

The first signs of a municipal constitution appear in With the growing power of the Habsburgs in the area the ties that bound Lucerne to Murbach weakened.

In the Habsburgs finally purchased Lucerne from Murbach. The purchase of Lucerne by the Habsburgs drove the three forest cantons Uri , Schwyz and Unterwalden to form an Eternal Alliance , an act that is considered to be the foundation of Switzerland.

In Lucerne became the fourth member of the Eidgenossen or Swiss Confederation , and the first town to join the rural forest cantons. The Battle of Sempach near Sempach which while allied wouldn't become part of the canton for 8 more years drove the Habsburgs out of the region and strengthened the Confederation.

That victory led also to the gradual acquisition of territory ruled by and from the town. Amstalden, a wealthy innkeeper Schüpfheim in the Entlebuch valley of the canton of Lucerne, was the leader of a planned rebellion of the valley against the city of Lucerne.

In a plot to limit the power of the city, officials from the neighbouring canton of Obwalden had promised their support. The conspiracy was detected before they could stage the planned coup.

On 24 August , Amstalden was arrested, tortured and interrogated, and finally beheaded in November The incident furthered the distrust amongst rural and urban cantons in the Old Swiss Confederacy and was one of the reasons for the conclusion of the Stanser Verkommnis Treaty of Stans in , an important coalition treaty of the cantons of the Old Swiss Confederacy.

During the Reformation Lucerne remained attached to Roman Catholicism, of which ever since it has been the great stronghold in Switzerland.

The papal nuncio resided here from to In the 16th century, during the early modern age , the town government fell into the hands of an aristocratic oligarchy , whose power, though shaken by the Swiss peasant war of in the Entlebuch, lasted until Under the French -supported Helvetic republic — Lucerne was the seat of the central government.

When the republic collapsed, under the Act of Mediation it was one of the six " Directorial " cantons and during the Restoration from to it was one of the three ruling cantons.

The patrician government was swept away by the cantonal constitution of But in the Conservatives regained power.

They quickly recalled the Jesuits , who had been expelled by earlier radical governments, to head the cantonal school system. The riots that followed brought about the Sonderbund War in which the Conservatives were defeated, the decisive battle taking place at Gisikon, not far from Lucerne.

The canton of Lucerne is part of Central Switzerland. The lands of the canton lie on the northern foothills of the Swiss Alps Urner Alps. It borders the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden to the south, Schwyz and Zug to the east, Aargau to the north, and Berne to the west.

Its territory corresponds to the subject territories acquired by the city of Lucerne during the 14th and 15th centuries, including: Lucerne proper at the outflow of the Reuss river from Lake Lucerne ; the stretch of the Reuss river between Lucerne and Honau , along Rooterberg hill connecting to Lake Zug with the territory of Meierskappel municipality ; the Kleine Emme basin including its tributaries Entle and Rümlig ; the tributaries of the Aare between Napf and Lindenberg , including west to east Wigger , Suhre Lake Sempach , Wyna , Aabach Lake Hallwil , Lake Baldegg ; two territories connected only by water, across Lake Lucerne: the northern slope of Bürgenstock part of Lucerne municipality , and the municipalities of Greppen , Weggis and Vitznau on the western and south-western slopes of Mount Rigi.

An additional The remainder of the canton is either developed, Before , the districts were called Ämter.

There were five districts until , when Luzern District was divided into Luzern-Land and Luzern-Stadt , the latter corresponding to the city of Lucerne proper including Littau , incorporated into Lucerne in There are 83 municipalities in the canton As of [update].

Even more west of it is the Buochser Bucht , but the lake sharply turns north again through the narrow opening between the Unter Nas lower nose of the Bürgenstock to the west and the Ober Nas upper nose of the Rigi to the east to reach the Vitznauer Bucht.

In front of Vitznau below the Rigi the lake turns sharply west again to reach the center of a four-arm cross, called the Chrütztrichter Cross Funnel.

Here converge the Vitznauer Bucht with the Küssnachtersee from the north, the Luzernersee from the west, and the Horwer Bucht and the Stanser Trichter to the south, which is to be found right below the northeast side of the Pilatus and the west side of the Bürgenstock.

At the very narrow pass between the east dropper of the Pilatus called Lopper and Stansstad the lake reaches its southwestern arm at Alpnachstad on the steep southern foothills of the Pilatus, the Alpnachersee.

The lake drains its water into the Reuss in Lucerne from its arm called Luzernersee which literally translates as Lake of Lucerne.

Its volume is Much of the shoreline rises steeply into mountains up to 1, m above the lake, resulting in many picturesque views including those of the mountains Rigi and Pilatus.

It is possible to circumnavigate the lake by train and road, though the railway route circumvents the lake even on the north side of the Rigi via Arth-Goldau.

Since , the A2 motorway leads through the Seelisberg Tunnel in order to reach the route to the Gotthard Pass in just half an hour in Altdorf, Uri right south of the beginning of the lake in Flüelen.

Steamers and other passenger boats ply between the different villages and towns on the lake. It is a popular tourist destination, both for native Swiss and foreigners, and there are many hotels and resorts along the shores.

In addition, the meadow of the Rütli , traditional site of the founding of the Swiss Confederation , is on the Urnersee shore. The name of Vierwaldstättersee is first used in the 16th century.

Before the 16th century, the entire lake was known as Luzerner See "Lake Lucerne", as remains the English and partly Italian, as Lago di Lucerna usage.

The notion of "Four Waldstätten" Vier Waldstätten , with the addition of the canton of Lucerne , is first recorded in the s, in an addition to the "Silver Book" of Egloff Etterlin of Lucerne.

The nine different parts of the lake have individual designations: [1] [3]. Lake Lucerne borders on the three original Swiss cantons of Uri , Schwyz , and Unterwalden which today is divided into the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden , as well as the canton of Lucerne , thus the name Vierwaldstättersee lit.

Lake Lucerne is singularly irregular and appears to lie in four different valleys, all related to the conformation of the adjoining mountains.

The central portion of the lake lies in two parallel valleys whose direction is from west to east, the one lying north, the other south of the ridge of the Bürgenstock.

These are connected through a narrow strait, scarcely one kilometre wide, between the two rocky promontories called respectively Unter Nas and Ober Nas Lower and Upper Nose.

It is not unlikely that the southern of these two divisions of the lake—called Buochser Bucht —formerly extended to the west over the isthmus whereon stands the town of Stans , thus forming an island of the Bürgenstock.

The west end of the main branch of the lake, whence a comparatively shallow bay extends to the town of Lucerne, is intersected obliquely by a deep trench whose south-west end is occupied by the branch called Alpnachersee , while the north-east branch forms the long arm of Küssnacht , Küssnachtersee.

These both lie in the direct line of a valley that stretches with scarcely a break in between the Uri Alps and the Emmental Alps.
